What is "Imago Trinitatis"?

What is "Imago Trinitatis"?

"Imago Trinitatis" is a Latin phrase meaning "in the image of the Trinity."  I encountered this phrase within my theological studies in the works of Hans Urs von Balthasar.

What does it mean?

Genesis 1:27, from the creation story, says, "God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."  In the New Testament, God reveals Himself as a Trinity of Persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  The three Persons live in an eternal communion of love, as 1 John 4:8 says, "God is love."  Thus, if we are made in the image of God, we are made in the image of the Trinity.

Why does this matter?

This shows us that we are made for this communion of love, both with God and with each other.  It affects our purpose and guides us in living our vocations.  It encourages us to live in charity and to share this Good News with others.  We realize that we are made to share in the eternal love of the Trinity through the Church, the Bride of Christ, and we are able to respond freely to this invitation.

I have found this to be a beautiful foundation for my entire life, both as a son of God and as a deacon preparing to be a priest.  I hope my homilies and reflections on this website can lead others to this as well.

"Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything."
- Fr. Pedro Arrupe
